Cohiba Pirámides Extra Tubos

Truth be told, there was another cigar planned for this cigar review session.  But upon opening my humidor, the COHIBA tubos was calling out, once I opened the tubos, the aromas that came out were just too hard to ignore.  After 3 years of sitting in the humidor, it was time for this Cohiba to meet a match.

Cohiba Piramides Extra Tubos

ABOUT THE CIGAR

BOX DATE JUL 2015.

SIZE:  6.3 inches in length by 54 ring gauge.

This has become my favorite Cohiba, second only to the almighty Siglo VI.  In my opinion, the latter is perhaps the best regular production cigar on the market.

Let’s see if this Piramides Extra Tubos maintains the high ranking I already have of it.

1st part.

Classic  Cohiba, with a superb construction.  I am picking up sweet tobacco and a little bit of a floral note on it.  The cigar shows signs that it will be a complex experience.  After a few puffs, it is still sweet and starting giving out pronounced notes of dried abricot.  It is very very tasty.

The pairing is my go to espresso of late; Kicking Horse “Grizzly Paw” blend. It is not a great marriage.  The dark chocolate flavor of the espresso is over powering the smoothness and sweetness of the Cohiba.  I imagine that a Calvados with a little age on it would pair nicely.  Another good pairing would be the CAMUS “Ile de Re” Cognac.  The sea salt flavor of that cognac would marry nicely with this cigar.

2nd part.

As you would expect, the strength has intensified.  The sweetness and floral, and dried fuirt is all but gone, replaced with a caramel type flavor.  This habanos is complex, and rich.

3rd part.

The cigar is producing a rich, thick smoke that Gandalf the Grey would be envious of, whilst Bilbo Baggins watches in awe.  The flavor as evolved yet again.  This may sound odd, but I am getting a kind of a salty meat flavor.  (and FYI, I did not have that for dinner)

This Piramides Extra has told its’ story.  It was a really enjoyable and complex evolution making this a wonderful experience.

Summary

A solid 9 on 10.  We are always told by Habanos S.A. that Cohiba is the flagship brand of the Cuban cigar company, and that only the best rollers roll Cohibas, and that only the best tobacco is used for the “marca”.  I cannot say it that is 100% accurate for the entire range from the brand, but I would testify that those 2 attributes are true with the Cohiba Piramides Extra that I just enjoyed, as well as the others I had the privilege to enjoy in the past.

The price for each cigar is not inexpensive; in Canada, they retail for $115 CAD, and in the UK they retail for £47.50.  If a celebration cigar is called for, or if you just need to change the course of a not so pleasant day, go ahead, and treat yourself to one of the best cigars on the market today.

SUGGESTED PAIRING:

Aged Calvados, ie:  Roger Groult 12 years.  And /or Camus Île de Ré Fine Island Cognac.  Hibiki Japanese Harmony Whisky
