Cohiba Majestuosos 1966 Limited Edition Humidor and Cigar

Ever since I have been in the cigar business, there has never been a cigar that has received so much fanfare and demand as the Cohiba Majestuosos.  Of all the special humidor releases we have had available, all the Gran Reserva cigars, book humidors, Behikes, the single item I received the most requests for, was this cigar.  The irony, most of the people that bought this humidor have not smoked the cigar.  Of the clients I know who purchased it, only 9 have smoked the cigars.  The others are hanging on to the full humidor either as an investment, or for ageing potential.  Incredible.

For this cigar, writing a review would not be appropriate.  It is more than a cigar, for many people, it is a statement, an investment, a self reward.   And so, I will treat this more as a sharing of my experience with it.  Each person will have had their own experience in buying this cigar, or receiving it as a gift, and each person will have their own setting for it.

The cigar world was introduced to this 58 ring gauge beast at the 2016 Habanos Festival, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the celebrated flagship cigar brand.  It comes in a 20 count humidor, and only 1966 units were made.  When it was originally launched, retailers all around the planet were scrambling to get their hands on one so that they could satisfy the high demand for it.  As the Cohiba Majestuosos became harder to find, the price starting to climb.  What started off as under $10,000, quickly grew to $15,000.  Currency was almost irrelevant.

ABOUT THE HUMIDOR

1966 units were released to house the 20 Cohiba Majestuosos cigars.  The humidor is sleek, lacquered black and macassar ebony dark wood finish.  Compared to the other Habanos “Humidor” releases, it is rather small.  I highly doubt anyone would use this as an actual humidor, although the construction is fine and would be a respectable working humidor.  But that’s not the point is it?

The packaging is underwhelming and does not equivalate to the hype.  The humidor comes in a (real?) leather protective lining, and then in a black cardboard Habanos box.  We’ve come accustomed to the really cool wooden crates that the previous Habanos special humidors have been released in.

When the Majestuosos finally hit the market in 2017, there began a market frenzy.  Most retailers had several clients on their waiting lists for this Cohiba.  Unfortunately, there were only 1966 produced.  Consequently, the prices began to sky rocket. Originally, the standard retail price was already higher than we expected, so they became very hard to get.  It was a seller’s market.  One collector reportedly bought 30 humidors.

As mentioned above, despite its popularity, I only know a select group of people that have actually smoked one.  By that measure, it does not include the non banded cigars that “a friend from the factory” gave us.  Most collectors are keeping their humidors full, banking on a pleasant payoff in years to come.  Time will tell, but life is short, and these cigars were rolled to light up.

Here we go.  My experience with the Cohiba Majestuosos.

First Part

The very first puffs were very full bodied.  The cigar has a very velvety and creamy texture to it, and the flavor is.  I am picking up the same type of floral aromas you get when are at a floral botanist shop that has countless different flower varieties stored in a very cool and humid environment.

Construction.  The cigar is extremely well rolled.  The draw is a perfect balance of firmness without any struggle.

Second Part

The strength of the Majestuosos has become slightly milder.  At this stage, it is tasting as a very well made COHIBA would taste.  The floral tones have evolved into more nut bread tones.

Third Part

The ending has not gained any strength, except for at the very end, with only about 2 inches left.   The cigar was mild in flavor, but was full in the sense that you feel the intensity of the tobacco.  It was not an overpowering Partagas Serie P No. 2 for example.  Richer, more than stronger.  It just got creamier and creamier has the cigar burned to its end.

Summary.

Let’s face it, this is a special cigar.  Throughout it, I kept thinking of Paul Giamatti in the movie Sideways.  His friend kept saying that you need a very special occasion to drink that crazy expensive wine.  Paul Giamatti’s character insisted that the “special occasion” is drinking the wine, and no other occasion was needed to uncork a special wine.  The special wine WAS the occasion.  He proceeded (SPOILER ALERT) to drink the wine at a small diner, with no fuss, no fan fare.

This COHIBA Majestuosos is the equivalent of that bottle of wine.  It is THE occasion.   The reality is, no one will be smoking bundles of these.  When you do, take your favorite cutter, clip it, and proceed to light it with your choice of flame, and make it count.  I am looking forward to smoking another one, without writing any notes as I do.  After all, that is way cigars are meant to be enjoyed.

Smoke well!

SCORE for those would like one

Construction 10 on 10

Flavor 9 on 10

Evolution 8 on 10

OVERALL 9 on 10

Note:  This cigar was smoked a few months back.  Since then, I have smoked another and wanted to enjoy it without writing, and later compare my notes to see if the two cigars were similar.  They were.  A good sign.
