In lieu of the annual Habanos festival usually held in February, over 650 cigar lovers participated in the “Cohiba 55th Anniversario” event which occurred in Havana from Sept. 7 to 9. See details of the COHIBA 55th Festival at our friends at L’Amateur de Cigare.
As is customary during the closing gala night of the Habanos Festival, exclusive one of a kind, handcrafted humidors are auctioned off. All the proceeds are said to go to the Cuban health system, and over the years, prices went from 100,000 to millions of dollars. In recent years, there were 5 to 10 humidors from the various brands auctioned off. This year, the focus was on Cohiba with one main humidor on the block. The record for the highest ever auction humidor was broken with a final sale price of a whopping 2,800,000 Euro.

THE HUMIDOR
The humidor pays tribute to the 55 year success story of the most iconic cigar brand in the world. Containing 550 Cohiba cigars from all of the Lineas in the brand’s portfolio, the humidor is a stunning piece of art. A cave shaped humidor was designed by the “Nous” group and executed by “Humidores Habana”, with team leaders Jose Ernesto Aguilera and Jorge Luis Ramos Santiago. The outside contains a precious wood veneer with mother of pearl embedded along the base. Further, the Cohiba 55th anniversary logo is crowned by Swarovski crystals. The humidor is built to hold 550 cigars and comes with a humidification system and analog hygrometers.

The auction was an interesting affair of back and forth bidding from 3 main bidders. In the end, the gentlemen businessman from Singapore, Jimmy Ng closed the bidding at a record breaking 2,800,000 Euro.
