This latest release from Habanos is not from their usual playbook. For the first time, Habanos has released a cigar to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year and the Spring Festival. For the occasion, we have with us the Romeo Y Julieta Maravillas 8, commemorating the 2020 Year of The Rat. The boxes are not numbered, however, this is written in the packaging “….produced in exclusive and in limited quantities,…”

ABOUT THE CIGAR

RING GAUGE: 55 x 155 mm

Factory Size: Maravillas No. 3

Box count: 8 cigars per box

The packaging for this Romeo Y Julieta is quite attractive. It comes in a red lacquered box, trimmed with the Romeo colors found on normal production boxes. Each cigar has an extra ring at the foot of the cigar with the “Year of the Rat 2020” marking. All of that comes in a red velvet case and then a cardboard case similar to the Cohiba Behike line.

The vitola size was used most recently in 2012 for the very popular Montecristo “520” Limited Edition 2012. If the latest Year of the Rat edition is anywhere close to as tasty as the Montecristo, we’re in for a treat!

Pricing is always a consideration with these special limited editions. In Canada, the cigars retail for approximately $180 per cigar.

One cannot help but think of the Davidoff special releases that pay hommage to the Chinese New Year cigars of recent years. And if you’re wondering why only 8 cigars in the box, 8 is regarded as the luckiest number in the Chinese culture. It is pronounced “ba”, which sounds like “Fa”, which means to make a fortune. Thank you Wikipedia!
