Punch Coronations Tubos, 1999 Vintage Cigar

Given all this extra free time during this never before seen period, I had the chance to revisit some forgotten corners of my humidors.  Tucked away was a box of Punch Coronations in Tubos from 1999.  I had many fond memories of this very humble cigar over the years.  Only 2 were left and they are now 21 years old.  I wanted to share my experience and hope you are also re-discovering lost treasures during this isolation period.

ABOUT THE CIGAR –PUNCH :: Coronations Tubos from 1999

The Punch Coronations existed in 2 versions.  A machine made one until 2002, and a handmade one.  The one being featured here is handmade, and comes in a box of 25 tubes.  It was released prior to 1960, and discontinued in 2002.  There still exists in current production a Punch Coronation that comes in a green tube and is machine made.  It is always a good, surreal feeling when opening up one of these old tubes.  They most likely have not been opened since they were in a cigar factory in Havana some 21 years ago.  This whole time, the cigar waits patiently for a slice and a spark.

BOX DATE: 1999

SIZE:  42 x 5 1/8 inches.

FACTORY NAME: Marevas

1st Part

The tip of this cigar was slightly pointed, and pulling it out of the tube, you could smell the rich aromas.  I love the old, un-assuming cigar band, not embossed, just a simple design and 2 colors.  The Punch is producing lots of big smoke considering the small size of the cigar.  The flavor is very pronounced and smoky, like you would get from a Single Malt whisky from Islay.  I expected an earthier flavor based on the uncut cigar.

2nd Part

The smokiness continues, joined by a dark chocolate bitterness you get from a high percentage cocoa.

3rd Part

The ending has developed into a more complex cigar than the beginning foreshadowed.  The flavors, are the same, but enhanced and richer.  The texture is also creamier than the initial parts of the cigar.  It has changed my overall enjoyment of this old Punch cigar in a positive way.

SUMMARY

One of the aspects of vintage cigars I enjoy, especially when you have a full box or a hand full of the same cigar, is to see how they change and evolve over time.  That is why, when purchasing older cigars, it is always a good idea to pick up a full box, and when that is not possible, buying 3 or 4 of the same cigar, is a fun, long term experience.  You get to taste how the tobacco has aged, and continues to alter between the times you smoke each one.  In this case, the first few I tasted were a little creamier.  The flavor I remember being very similar, however, it started sooner.  This time around, it took a little longer for the full character of the cigar to show.  Would it be safe to say that the next one smoked in a few years will take even longer, and eventually, the flavor will be almost gone?  Time will tell.
