Hoyo de Monterrey Primaveras "YEAR OF THE OX" Special Release

After successful releases celebrating the Chinese Zodiac by Davidoff, other brands have followed suit.  Cuba originally had launched the Year of the Rat with a Romeo Y Julieta release back in 2019.  They have since introduced annual special edition boxes each year since.

Let’s take a look at the Year of the Ox release coming out of Havana.

BRAND:  HOYO DE MONTERREY

CIGAR:  Primaveras

SIZE:  48 x 6 5/8

FACTORY NAME:  Hermosos No. 1

Officially a 2020 release, in reality the cigars hit the shops in late 2021 and early 2022.  Each cigar comes with the standard Hoyo band, along with a footboard featuring the Year of the Ox logo.  The footband is a nice addition and here is hoping they continue the trend with other releases.  The 18 cigars come a beautiful red lacquered box, with a red velvet outer sleeve and all in a red outer box.  Keeping in line with the packaging used for the Gran Reserva and Behike releases.  A total of 8,888 boxes were made.

The Year of the Ox was the second release by Habanos celebrating the Chinese Zodiac.  The first was the Romeo Y Julieta “Marvaillas 8” Year of the Rat in 2019 / 2020. Others included:

H. Upmann – Magnum 52 – Year of the Tiger.  18 cigars, 52 x 5 7/8.  Officially a 2021 release.

Cohiba – Siglo De Oro – Year of the Rabbit.  18 cigars, 54 x 4 1/2.  This has not yet been released.

Of note, no Habanos cigar with the Hermosos No. 1 is in regular production.  All of the releases in this size are limited edition, La Casa del Habano editions, and / or featured in limited edition humidor releases.  Here is a list of the other Habanos cigars released with the Hermosos No. 1 size:

Whilst these are interesting releases, most consumers will have a hard time finding them on store shelves.  The exclusivity of them is appealing, especially since Habanos has used interesting and not commonly used vital sizes for these releases.  It is a refreshing change from the Regional Edition releases that often share sizes.
