Every once in a while, Habanos releases something that sets them apart from all the rest.  In 2014, they did just that.  The H. Upmann “Replica of an Ancient Humidor” is special.  The humidor is gorgeous, and the cigars are from another time.  Let’s dive in.

The humidor

Only 450 of these beauties were made and they hit the shops in late 2015.  These were handcrafted entirely by hand, and so you will notice slight imperfections, that just adds to the charm.  The humidor is solid and feels really well constructed.  It can be used as a stand-alone humidor once all the cigars that are included come victim to the flame.

This series was made exclusively for the La Casa del Habano network of franchises.  The 450 humidors were produced in the workshop of the artist and craftsman in wood and precious metals, Ernesto Aguilera.

If we compare to the original humidor, the 2014 replica comes very close and respects the feel and nature of the old one.

50 cigars are in the humidor.

As of the writing of this article, no other Habanos cigar was released in this size.  It is close to the almighty  Salomones, however those are slightly small with a 57 ring gauge.

In 1935, an H. Upmann advert showcased their range of vitolas. Included in there was the double perfecto called the “Butifarra”.  At the time, during the commercialization for the British market, the name “The Flying Pig” was used for this cigar.  The original size was 55 by 125 mm long, way ahead of it’s time when we compare to the other cigars that were available during that time.  Even today, close to 90 years later, that is considered a wide ring gauge.

Stay tuned for a future article as we dive into the Partagas 170 Anniversario Humidor, also a treat.
