Plain packaging is now ongoing in Canada.  For months now, the major cigar distributors have been supplying the retailers cigars that comply with the very unpopular packaging law that was passed by the Trudeau government.  For full details on the plain packaging law, please refer to our article published October 2020 here.

As of the date of this article, all the Cuban cigars come in the brownish colored boxes, with the cigars having matching bands.  Most of the cigars have the original band under the brown band, but not all.  As for the New World Cigars, there is a kind of transition phase going on with most suppliers.  As manufacturers scramble to meet high demand, they are also faced with the added layer of having to have special packaging for the Canadian market.  Some brands decided simply not to bother.

This is not easy to get used to for any cigar in the portfolio.  However, when the special releases came in, it was all the more painful to see.  The Cohiba Behike line, that always comes in a beautiful black lacquered box, with glossy bands, now comes in a thin paper box.

The highly anticipated Reserva and Gran Reserva cigars, not only have the black lacquered boxes missing, but also the numbering on the boxes.

The only consolidation is that the cigars look and smell great.  Oh, and prices for the above-mentioned cigars, in Canadian dollars.  Per cigar.

Cohiba Behike 52:  $160 CAD

Bolivar Reserva Belicosos Finos: $169 CAD

Hoyo De Monterrey Gran Reserva Double Corona: $250 CAD

This is the equivalent of a bottle of LOUIS XIII Cognac being sold in a cardboard box.  We know that not everything in life is permanent.  Let’s hope that this momentary lapse of reason from our Canadian government will revert itself at some point.

Unbelievable.

  1. As for me the Canadian Government can keep it all
with the reputation of being the most expensive place to buy cuban cigars with that hefty luxury tax added to every Habano.
    No…but no…thanks.
    Jocky.

    1. it’s a shame as it only encourages illegal trading and selling.

  2. Totally agree, its about ideology with the Government, not common sense.
