Romeo Y Julieta, Coronita en Cedros Cigar Review

Cigar enthusiasts are always looking for that next big ring gauge cigar to fall in love with. Now there’s nothing wrong with that, but sometime one doesn’t have the time to smoke a Hoyo de San Juan, Montecristo No. 2, or a H. Upmann Magnum 54, while still needing to have that quick stick to satiate a craving. I found myself in such a situation recently and came across the Romeo Y Julieta Coronita en Cedros.  I was intrigued as I’ve never has one before. Now is a good a time as any!

The Coronita en cedros’ factory name is the Petit Cedros, a size that loses itself amongst the many sizes that make up the corona family.    At just a little over 5 inches long and a 40 ring gauge, it’s the perfect size to keep me company for 30 to 40 minutes.  This cigar was from a 2017 box.

     It’s time to light up.

The cigar comes wrapped in cedar and it was no surprise that the cold draw was very woody. The cigar lit nicely and I was immediately taken on how strong it was!  It was very much reminiscent of a Partagas Short or Bolivar Petit Corona.  But then again, a cigar usually comes on a bit strong at first.  After a few minutes it settled down a bit, but always with a bit of strength that showed itself upon lighting.

The middle third showed traces of those classic Romeo y Julieta notes.  Tobacco and leather flavors blend well with that strong kick that was present when first lit and came back strong to make another appearance. There are faint, cedar-y traces too.

There’s no real change in the final third.  It was surprising to me that this Romeo y Julieta has the power that it did. Very unlike the brand name to be that way.  Still an enjoyable cigar.  I didn’t accompany the cigar with any libation.  I kept thinking to myself that a black tea, like an Oolong would have been perfect with this cigar.  I guess I’ll just have to get myself another one and see for myself!
