It’s been a full 6 years since the release of the last regular production vitola from Cuba’s oldest continuously existing cigar brand, Por Larranaga. The previous cigar, the Picadores (48 X 127mm) entered the line’s regular production elusively, marketed initially as an LCDH exclusive. The resuscitation of this vitola from the pre-1970s era, marked Por Larranaga’s push towards more long filler production bolstering a traditionally machine-made heavy portfolio.
Continuing this trend toward heavier gauge, long-fillers, is the Galanes (52 X 120mm) a novel vitola containing dimensions never before seen in the Cuban cigar world. Emerging from a cigar factory from the same name, the medium-bodied Galanes is procured from leaves from the Vuelta Abajo and Semi Vuelta zones of the Pinar del Rio.
With the Montecarlo (33 X 159mm), Picadores (48 X 127mm) Panetelas (5 x 127 mm) and Petit Corona (42 X 129mm) since falling victim to the plain-packaging legislation here in Canada, the Galanes will be the sole vitola carrying the torch for the PL brand in the country. As of early April, the first shipments of these 10 count boxes (traditionally housed in a varnished semi-boite nature boxes) have arrived in Canada. Having established a strong reputation in recent years on account of their consistent regional releases the expectations for Por Larranaga’s latest Galanes, a hopefully permanent addition to the brand’s core portfolio, are high.
