Montecristo Petit No.2

The Montecristo Petit No 2 is a brand new release from Habanos and the first Petit Pyramide vitola in regular production. Given that its big brother the Montecristo No.2, is a classic among aficionado and occasional smokers, will this smaller version hold its own and make a reputation for itself? Let’s get to the nitty gritty.

It is a 52mm ring gauge by 120mm long and it sports the newly redesigned Montecristo band.

This example came from one of the first batch to reach our side of Canada and it is really well built. There aren’t any soft spots, the foot is full and the cap is sweating oils. It smells of pure tobacco and barnyard.

After an easy clip, I get a perfect draw. Let’s light up, it’s spark O clock!

1st Third:

The initial flavour blast is medium body and they are a bit tough on the nose when I retro hale the smoke. I can taste toasted tobacco with a light sweetness. It is along the line of powdered cocoa or milk chocolate. This cigar is mouth-watering. It has light sour notes that make my mouth water. It suits it quick nicely. This isn’t a really complex cigar yet but it is much smoother then at the beginning. The size is quite nice and it is sitting nicely in my hand.

2nd Third:

So far this is performing better than the other new offering from Montecristo, the Double Edmundo. It is still at medium body, still smooth and produces a pleasant after taste that doesn’t stay too long but just enough to remind you to take another pull. It produces a good amount of smoke of medium thickness. The cigar smoke smells really good, it fills up the room with a great sweetness. Flavour wise, I get some toasted tobacco, wood notes and the sour backdrop is still there to complete its panel of flavours. This is a nice smoke. The last part of this third is picking up in body and it is suiting the Petit No.2 very well.

3rd

Alright, now we are talking, the medium full body gives an extra oomph to the flavours. Wood, coffee beans and that powered cocoa are just working so well together. The previous sour notes have gone but the complexities of the others have filled the gap. The after taste is rich, present and damn good. I don’t get much bitterness at the end of this cigar like some other examples of young ones. I can nub this one without a problem.

Now, I believe this have a rightful place in the Montecristo regular production line up. As to whether it is better than the No.2, I wouldn’t go that far. When examples of the Petit No.2 have 5 or 10 years of age we can then evaluate its aging potential but for now, it is a good fresh cigar.

I give it a 7.5/10
